Interwoven is an exploration of the dynamic tapestry that is the Houston photo community, a myriad of threads intricately woven together. Community, though not a novel subject, remains an ever-evolving narrative—a collective endeavor in constant flux. Through the collaboration of FLATS Founder, Jessi Bowman, and photographer Ryan Francisco this exhibition, presented in two parts, invites you to view a handful of diverse perspectives and experiences that shape the cultural landscape of our city.
At the heart of Interwoven lies a curated selection of artists whose backgrounds, ages, and artistic styles span a broad spectrum. Each piece serves as a lens through which the artists introspectively examine their surroundings, diving into personal narratives intertwined with familial histories, cultural legacies, meditations on the environment, and the ever-shifting contours of identity. Others examine memory and emotion, navigating the complexities of multiculturalism, the nuances of grief and affection, or something more intangible.
Interwoven serves as an homage to Bowman & Francisco’s roots. Harkening from 2013 when Francisco held shows with a collective of women in Houston-run businesses and FLATS began in 2016 as a movement held in apartments, or "flats," across Houston. Where these grassroots movements were meant to initiate connection and collaboration within Houston's photography community—Interwoven serves as a testament to the spirit of unity in these collective endeavors. By amplifying the voices of these artists this exhibition celebrates the rich tapestry of our community, weaving together the threads that bind us all inextricably together.
ART MASS
Sunday, June 16th,1 pm
Join us for an immersive and introspective afternoon as we gather together for Art Mass, a gathering for the sake of art. Inspired by the collaborative energy of collective gatherings, this event offers a unique opportunity for individuals to engage in meaningful dialogue, introspection, and creative expression.
Begin the afternoon with a reflection on community in art centered around themes of identity and the transformative power of visual storytelling. This will be followed by a meditation period during which attendees are welcome to create and work together in the shared space. We hope for everyone to depart feeling energized, empowered, and tightly woven into the vibrant tapestry of our community's creative spirit.
Attendees are asked to bring:
